One of the hottest destinations in the world at the moment is the modern metropolis of Shanghai. Situated in east China, a holiday in China is incomplete without taking in the sights and sounds of its most cosmopolitan city. When planning a trip to Shanghai, make sure to prepare a list of the particular places and events you want to experience, as a disorganised trip will leave you feeling distinctly disappointed. Whether you are planning a few days, a week, or more, you’ll easily fill your days with exciting activities. Just make sure to priorities and plan ahead!

Key travel experiences not to be missed when on holiday in China

The most famous view of Shanghai is undoubtedly that of The Bund: the main strip running alongside the Huangpo River. At the estuary of China’s lifeline, the Yangtze River, the Huangpo River and its shoreline offer stunning views, ones which will always live in the mind of somebody who has experienced Shanghai for themselves. Clocking in at the tallest TV tower in Asia, take a trip up the iconic Oriental Pearl Tower for vistas of the surrounding area from their observation deck. Make sure also to check out the Yuyuan Garden – or Garden of Contentment – for a relaxing day out amongst some classical Ming and Qing architecture. Such a combination of modern and ancient will strike you wherever you go in Shanghai, so keep an eye out.

Remember to take some extra cash: shopping here is second to none

Shanghai is renowned for its excellent shopping opportunities, whether you are in the market for expensive designer items or for beautiful souvenirs, or both! Don’t miss the fashionable Xintiandi district with its combination of modern and old in the form of Shikumen buildings: an amalgamation of Western and Chinese architecture. Another tourist favourite is the French Concession area: a district once designated for the French in Shanghai and now a shopping haven for tourists and locals alike. Whatever your plans, there is something for everyone in Shanghai, and it is a holiday destination not to be missed.
